ViLabs goes FIERCE!

The European Commission has awarded funding to FIERCE (“Feminist Movements Revitalizing Democracy in Europe”) project coordinated by ViLabs. The project is funded under the Horizon Europe Cluster 2, “Culture, creativity and inclusive society” and the call “Feminisms for a new age of democracy”. FIERCE is carried out by a Consortium of 11 partners from 8 European countries (Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey).

FIERCE envisions inclusive versions of democracy through providing theoretical and practical knowledge and tools to revitalize alliances between the feminist movement, civil society, and political decision makers. Ιn a context of growing social inequalities, political disaffection and amplification of populist radical right anti-gender actors and discourses, FIERCE develops an in-depth understanding of feminist and anti-feminist/anti-gender movements, activities and discourses, and their impact on the institutional arena and on policy outcomes, focusing on the period 2010-2021. Focus will be given to key gender debates and controversies in the areas of labour market, health and reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ rights, migration, and gender-based violence. FIERCE’s research methodology uses an interdisciplinary, multi-dimensional and multi-level framework based on framing, political ethnography, and social network analysis. The project covers eight case studies (France, Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Turkey, Denmark, Poland, Spain) representing a wide variety of socio-political, geographical and welfare terms and further provides a cross-cutting comparative analysis of the way debates and controversies on gender have influenced the dynamics and output of the policy process. Capitalising on co-creation methods and on a strong alliance with civil society organisations, FIERCE will pilot a series of actions on a national and transnational level that will bring together participants from mixed backgrounds in the view to reinvigorate democratic practices, in line with feminist inclusive visions for the future of democracy.

The project will run for 3 years from September 2022 to September 2025 and will bring together a Consortium with diverse expertise comprised by 7 universities, 2 SMEs, 1 research center and 1 NGO, that includes ViLabs (Greece), Aalborg University (Denmark), Scuola Normale Superiore (Italy), Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain), Koc University (Turkey), Univerza v Ljubljani (Slovenia), Aristotelio Panepistimio Thessalonikis (Greece), Smart Venice (Italy), Alternatives European Association (France), Mirovni inštitut (Slovenia) and the University of Gdańsk (Poland). ViLabs is the Coordinator and Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation Manager of FIERCE project.

FIERCE gives prominence to an innovative bottom-up, problem-driven, and impact-oriented approach to bring together academic knowledge, policy-making and bottom-up democratic strategies.
