Vrije Universiteit Brussel – Department of Electronics and Informatics

The ETRO department hosts three research groups: Micro-electronics (LAMI), Multidimensional signal processing and communication (IRIS) and Digital Speech and Audio Processing (DSSP).

As a truly multidisciplinary research group, people at ETRO look for inspiration in the unexplored engineering bottlenecks at the interface of various application domains. Creating an impact on the transformation processes of the knowledge society is their ambition. Knowledge accumulation and dissemination remain the day-to-day assignment. With approx. 100 motivated people, the researchers at ETRO strive to surpass state of the art in their research domains and try to pass on that knowledge to an ever more international student population.

Because of the application-driven research focus, ETRO has a longstanding reputation in cooperating with local and international industry, but also public services and hospitals. Considerable experience was gained in dealing with various actors along different application value chains which enabled them to develop a generic R&D background that is applicable in very diverse sectors (e.g. health care, automotive, media, surveillance, security, public safety, remote sensing, energy, telecommunications, content industry, creative industries …).

In recent years, policymakers have recognised the increasing need for closer industry-academia collaboration and dedicated funds have been allocated to foster such type of bridge building research. Since 2005 the ETRO department is recognized as a key industrial research pole at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

Medical school- Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

The Laboratory of Medical Physics was founded within the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki back in 1964. It was the first medical physics laboratory in the Greek Higher Education. The mission of the Lab is to excel in training and multi-disciplinary research in a setting that fosters creativity and synergy. The Laboratory dedicatedtes to training young doctors in the principles of physics, biomedical technology and their applications in the Health Sciences through the courses of Medical Physics and Biomedical Technology as well as Medical Education in the graduate programmes of the Faculty of Health Sciences. The Lab also participates in the Inter-University postgraduate programme in Medical Physics-Radiophysics, as well as, in postgraduate education of resident doctors in radiology, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine. In addition, members of the Lab collaborate and participate in the following post-graduate programmes: 1. MSc in Medical Informatics (AUTH), 2. MSc in Nanoscience (AUTH), 3. MSc in Web Science (AUTH), 4. MSc in Informatics in Life Sciences (University of Patras), 5. MBA (University of Macedonia), 6. MSc in Diabetes Core Support (Nursing Dept, Technological Institute of Thessaloniki).

Centre for Research and Technology Hellas/ Informatics and Telematics Institute

The Informatics and Telematics Institute of the Centre for Research and Technology, Hellas is is part of a mature organization currently supervised by the Greek Secretariat of Research and Technology . ITI is active in research, both basic and industry-oriented, as well as technology transfer actions, in the following areas: computer vision, image and video analysis and coding, web semantics, intelligent software architectures, e-Health, biometrics, information security, 3D imaging and virtual reality applications, multimedia and internet technologies, educational and cultural technologies, telemedicine applications, digital and interactive television, data communications and computer networks.

Power Systems Laboratory – Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering – Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

Power Systems Laboratory is an active research group in the power systems field, with interests covering a wide range of power systems technologies and recently the area related with the restructuring of the electric power utility industry and corresponding software tools. PSL activities extend in general in the areas of: Power Systems Analysis and Planning,Transmission and Distribution (Voltage and Current Protection and Control, Earthing and Lighting Protection), Distribution Automation, Applications of Artificial Intelligence to Power Systems, Power Conversion (Wind Energy Conversion, Photovoltaics, SCADA), Power System Economics (Generation Operations Planning, Electric Load Forecasting), Power System Deregulation (Transmission Management, Electricity Market Design Issues), Distributed Energy Resources, Energy and Environmental Policy, Power Systems Transients.

Ca’ Foscari, University of Venice, Department of Computer Sciences, Statistic and Environmentla Studies

Founded in 1868, Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia is a leading university in Italy in Economics and Management, Humanities, Languages and Literature, Science. With more than 20,000 students and nearly 1,400 staff, UNIVE is organised into 8 Departments, 5 Interdepartmental Schools and 3 Schools, committed to developing the next generation of researchers, scientists and academics through collaboration across disciplines, advanced research projects and innovative study programs. The Department of Computer Sciences, Statistic and Environmentla Studies (DAIS) has been actively promoting raising awareness and project design activities aimed at fostering women’s role in ICT and increasing the number of female students enrolled in Computer Sciences.

Kaunas University of Technology, Faculty of Informatics

Kaunas University of Technology is the largest technical university in the Baltic States with totally 17 000 thousands students and about 1000 academic staff. It contains 13 faculties, 10 institutes, number of centres, departments, and laboratories. The university has over 17 thousands students and more than 500 PhD students. KTU is a coordinator of Lithuanian Distance Education Network (http://www.liedm.lt) and is contractor for several major national projects for ICT development in Higher Education.

University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Department of Engineering ‘Enzo Ferrari’

The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UniMORE) has a longstanding tradition (founded in 1175) and currently offers 80 bachelor and master classes through its ten departments. In compliance with the national laws, University recently established a Unified Committee for the promotion of equal opportunities (CUG) that aims to promote gender equality and fight any kind of discrimination within employees and students’ population.

Politecnico di Milano Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione

Politecnico di Milano is the largest Technical University in Italy (with its 1950 faculties and administrative and technical staff, and about 40,000 enrolled students) and one of the largest in Europe. The Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione (POLIMI) is among the largest ones of the Politecnico di Milano as it counts about 180 faculty members, 270 people among contract professors, short-terms researchers and Ph.D. students, and a staff of about 45 people in administrative and technical areas. POLIMI is devoted to innovative research and advanced education in the most important fields of information technology. It is organized in four distinct scientific areas: Electronics, Computer Engineering, Automation and Telecommunications. POLIMI has been directly involved in more than one hundred EC research projects and has incomes for more then 7 million euros each year from research contracts.
