Gender Dimension & Balance

Standing-up for gender equality in research and innovation projects, ensuring gender balance and attaining research excellence!

A primary objective of the EC Agenda is gender equality promotion in research and innovation, and a corresponding regulatory framework to tackle perplexing structural barriers. In this direction, the gender dimension is a dynamic concept, introduced to examine gender norms and stereotypes among researchers, as well as evolving gender roles. What is more, in the new Horizon Europe funding programme, the Commission will require gender equality plans in the form of official documents, with concrete measures and targets on gender balance in leadership and decision making, gender equality in recruitment and career progression, integration of the gender dimension into research and teaching content, as well as measures against gender-based violence, including sexual harassment, which will be an essential factor to consider when evaluating new proposals.

ViLabs applies traditional and innovative methods, to address gender-based inequalities:

  • Quantitative and qualitative research, focusing on emerging political, social and cultural developments and phenomena related to gender
  • Analysis of historical, sociological and philosophical factors related to gender
  • Investigation and mapping of present challenges and tensions related to gender-based inequalities
  • Literature review on past efforts and initiatives and mapping of needs and shortcomings
  • Development of innovative approaches, toolkits, proposed policies, as well as institutional frameworks to enhance gender equality, anti-discrimination and inclusiveness
  • Participatory and co-creation approaches, to enhance active engagement of interested parties, citizens, public actors and representatives and other stakeholders in thematic areas related to gender equality
  • Policy design and recommendations to improve, refine and reshape the accountability, transparency, effectiveness, and trustworthiness of institutions and public policies when it comes to gender equality policies, with respect and consideration to fundamental human rights
