GE Academy created improved tools to tackle gender inequalities

After three challenging years of Coordination and Support Action, GE Academy, was completed marking a significant milestone for the Horizon 2020 projects on gender equality. ViLabs was the coordinator of GE Academy, which developed and delivered a high-quality capacity-building program to foster and integrate gender equality in research, innovation and higher education. GE Academy was based on state-of-the-art knowledge and composed of a series of tailor-made training materials and different training formats including: In-person trainings, Summer Schools, Workshops, Webinars, Distributive Open Collaborative Courses (DOCCs) and Train-the-Trainer sessions.

GE Academy aimed at deepening and disseminating gender knowledge across Europe. It strived for skills’ increase of those who are implementing measures towards gender equality in their institutions such as management administrators, HR managers and academic staff, as well as of researchers and gender experts willing to deliver training sessions to research & innovation and higher education communities in Europe and beyond.

ViLabs was in charge of the project’s management and the dissemination – exploitation of the project’s key outcomes. The overall dissemination practices that were applied turned out very successful as the GE Academy enrolled nearly 50 gender experts from various fields as trainers, while thousands of people took part in the multitude of sessions. In addition, there was an overwhelming interest in the GE Academy project, as there were over 1000 newsletter subscribers and more than 1500 followers on GE Academy’s Twitter account; an outreach that showcases high-level reach across EU. Overcoming the challenges brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, the project put emphasis on organising online courses, thus, giving even more people the opportunity to participate in its capacity-building activities. What is more, the project’s YouTube channel serves as a video vault, where users can watch on demand the implemented training sessions.

GE Academy project was an unprecedented project that carried out a unique workplan and paved the way for EU-funded projects seeking to enhance the gender equality in research. Therefore, a prominent element is its legacy of valuable training resources. Since project completion on 2021, ViLabs maintains the GE Academy website as a powerful tool which offers multiformat and multilingual (18 different languages) training material free and open to everyone interested in gender equality issues. That was exactly what brought success to the project, as it was the first and only Horizon project with so many different training formats freely available.

The platform also serves as an important resource for public bodies, higher education institutions and research organisations to access to European funding, after the recent adoption of the Gender Equality Plan (GEP) as an eligibility criterion set by the European providing training material that covers this topic.

Through a successful 3-year effort, we, in ViLabs, are delighted for contributing to building an all-inclusive knowledge upon gender equality and coordinated a project that is considered as a success story for the European Commission. Having strengthened our expertise in gender equality and its dimension in research and innovation we continue our work with two more ongoing projects, namely CALIPER and FIERCE, whose accomplishments will be announced soon!
